Didirikan pada tahun 1784 dan menjadi kota pada tahun 1889, Sydney Mines memiliki sejarah panjang dalam produksi batu bara meskipun aktivitas penambangan kini telah berhenti. Sebelum pemukiman permanen didirikan, terdapat aktivitas signifikan di sepanjang pantai. Setelah keberhasilan operasi penambangan batu bara, Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company membangun pabrik baja di Sydney Mines pada tahun 1902. Pabrik tersebut, bersama dengan pabrik baja di Sydney yang dimiliki oleh Dominion Iron and Steel Company, berhasil memproduksi lebih dari 50% baja Kanada selama Perang Dunia I. Pabrik tersebut kemudian dijual ke British Empire Steel Corporation dan berhenti beroperasi beberapa tahun kemudian.
