Tektonik (dari bahasa Yunani Kuno τεκτονικός tektonikós yang artinya "berkaitan dengan konstruksi", melalui bahasa Latin tectonicus)^[1] adalah proses yang menghasilkan struktur dan sifat kerak bumi dan evolusinya dari waktu ke waktu. Bidang tektonik planet memperluas konsep ini ke planet dan bulan lain.^[2]^[3]

Proses-proses ini meliputi pembentukan gunung; pertumbuhan dan perilaku inti benua yang kuat dan tua yang dikenal sebagai "kraton"; dan cara lempeng-lempeng yang relatif kaku, yang membentuk lapisan luar bumi berinteraksi satu sama lain. Prinsip-prinsip tektonik juga memberikan kerangka kerja untuk memahami sabuk gempa bumi dan sabuk vulkanik yang secara langsung memengaruhi sebagian besar populasi global.

Studi tektonik penting sebagai panduan bagi ahli geologi ekonomi yang mencari bahan bakar fosil dan endapan bijih sumber daya logam dan nonlogam. Pemahaman tentang prinsip-prinsip tektonik dapat membantu ahli geomorfologi untuk menjelaskan pola erosi dan fitur permukaan Bumi lainnya.^[4]
