Salah satu pertandingan di Tweede Divisie

Sepak bola amatir dan profesional dulunya merupakan dunia yang terpisah di Belanda hingga musim 2016-17, ketika sistem promosi dan degradasi wajib diperkenalkan. Peluang untuk mendapatkan transfer ke divisi yang lebih tinggi atau risiko degradasi memberi tim insentif yang lebih besar untuk mencoba dan tampil lebih baik. Ini akan menguntungkan kualitas dan masa depan sepak bola Belanda.

Rencana untuk penataan ulang besar-besaran struktur liga nasional disetujui oleh rapat Majelis KNVB pada bulan Desember 2014. Di puncak piramida baru adalah Eredivisie, diikuti oleh Divisi Pertama, Divisi Kedua baru (Tweede divisie), dua Divisi Ketiga amatir (sebelumnya Topklasse) dan empat liga amatir Hoofdklasse. Secara teori, semua klub di semua level piramida ini dapat mencapai puncak.[1]
