Kehidupan awal
Lahir di Kashmir, Chopra tumbuh di Srinagar, India.[1] Ayahnya adalah D. N. Chopra dan pembuat film veteran Ramanand Sagar adalah saudara dari salah satu orangtuanya. Kecintaannya terhadap sinema Hindi dan dukungan keluarganya membuatnya mempelajari penyutradaraan film. Sebagai persiapannya, ia pergi ke Pune dan mempelajari penyutradaraan film di Institut Film dan Televisi India.
