Viking 2 diluncurkan pada tanggal 9 September 1975 dengan roket Titan IIIE.
Pada tanggal 7 Agustus 1976, Viking 2 berhasil mencapai Mars. Pada 3 September 1976, wahana pendarat mendarat di permukaan planet. Tempat pendaratan Viking 2 disebut Utopia Planitia.
Pengorbit Viking 2 terbang hingga sejauh 22 kilometer di atas bulan Deimos dan mengabadikan citra bulan tersebut.
