Papa är inte bara en engelsk form av far. De flesta romanska och germanska språk använder ordet. Även på arabiska, kinesiska och ryska finns någon motsvarighet. Citat från en:papa: "A lot of languages (often unrelated) have words with labial consonants and open vowels as their word for "father" and "mother"; /papa/ is just one example.
