Portable Document Format (PDF) er et åben standard-filformat skabt af Adobe Systems i 1993. Det blev til en ISO-standard i 2008.[1] PDF bliver anvendt til at repræsentere 2-dimensionale dokumenter i et apparatuafhængigt og skærmopløsningsuafhængigt dokument med fast opsætning.
Til at se PDF-filer skulle der oprindeligt anvendes specielle programmer, fx Adobe Acrobat Reader eller Evince. I 2000-tallet er stadigt flere programmer kommet til, såsom webbrowsere til almindelige computere og mobiltelefoner, f. eks. Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Apple's Safari, og tekstbehandlingsprogrammer (Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer) eller billedbehandlingsprogrammer (Apple Billedfremviser, GIMP) kan også bruges til at bearbejde PDF-filer, men sjældent ved at gemme ændringerne i den oprindelige fil.
Der eksisterer desuden en række programmer til automatisk udtrækning af tekst i en PDF-fil, f. eks. Adobe Acrobat og Adobe Acrobat Reader.[2]
