Bandet blev dannet i Boston i 1976, med sanger, sangskriver og rytmeguitarist Ric Ocasek; bassist og sanger Benjamin Orr; leadguitarist Elliot Easton; keyboardspiller Greg Hawkes og trommeslageren David Robinson.
