35 seats were up for election (one third): one seat for each of the 33 wards, plus 2 by-elections, one for Fazakerley and one for Melrose 50 seats needed for a majority
Elections to Liverpool City Council were held on 5 May 1983. One third of the council was up for election and the Labour party gained overall control of the council following it previously being under no overall control.[1]
