After the 2006 National Census, Chaypareh District was separated from Khoy County in the establishment of Chaypareh County, which was divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with Qarah Zia ol Din as its capital and only city at the time.[3] After the 2016 census, the village of Hajjilar was elevated to the status of a city.[4]

Population
At the time of the 2011 census, the county's population was 43,206 people in 11,775 households.[5] The 2016 census measured the population of the county as 47,292 in 13,718 households.[2]
