6daEXIt improvisation ensemble is a free improvisation and experimental music open collective based in Thessaloniki, Greece. 6daEXIt is one of the longest-lived improvisation ensembles in Europe, performing uninterrupted since 2007 (officially as 6daEXIt since 2008). The ensemble started during a music improvisation course in the School of Music Studies of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, held by Alexis Porfiriadis. 6daEXIt is independent from academic or other institutional context since 2012. 6daEXIt have collaborated with painters, dancers, video artists, music educators and schoolchildren, performed in anti-racist festivals and community outreach events across Greece, played alongside free form noise groups and new music ensembles. They have performed at festivals including the Onassis Stegi Open Day (2014, 2018, 2020), 52nd Dimitria Festival (2017), Moving Silence (2014), Espacio Tres / Χώρος 3 – ImaginariA (2011), Multeece Festival (2017), National Theatre of Northern Greece Festival (2010), “Street Cinema” – 50th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (2009), Edessa Spring Festival (2008) and during the summer events of the Municipality of Heraklion (2008). Their concerts have been held at recital halls and theatres such as the Onassis Cultural Center Athens, the Lazaristes Theatre Thessaloniki, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, the Ethnological & Folklife Museum Thessaloniki, the State Symphony Orchestra Rehearsal Hall “Solon Michailidis” Thessaloniki and different smaller venues like KET, Vitruvian Thing, 3ερκαλο and Transcendance, KNOT Gallery Athens, Viotechnia and Protos Orofos . The Greek pronunciation of the number 66 (eksindaeksi) resembles the sound of 6daExit, which is a wordplay also containing the words Dada (referring to the art movement) and exit. The name was conceived in 2008 replacing the collective’s initial name which was impro. The social dimension of collective improvisation holds a primary position in the ensemble’s identity, and decisions are taken in a democratic, non-hierarchical manner. The constant search for new timbral, rhythmic and textural possibilities are central for 6daEXIt, as is the purely social and political dimension of collective music-making. From 2009 until 2016, the ensemble has mainly performed intermedia free (and sometimes semi-structured or guided) improvisation, while after 2017 its practice was widened by starting to include, besides free improvisation, performance of works written either by its members or by 20th and 21st century avant-garde and international contemporary composers. Several music works by composers from all over the world have been specifically written for 6daEXIt. Examples of graphic and verbal score repertoire performed by the ensemble include works of Liliana Rodriguez Alvarado, Daniel Barbiero, John Cage, Barry Chabala, Kevin Corcoran, Ulrich Krieger, Joseph Kudirka, lo wie, Anton Lukoszevieze, Ian Mikyska, Carl Bergstrom Nielsen, Makoto Nomura, Lance Austin Olsen, Michael Pisaro, Peter Sterk, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Taylan Susam, Bill Thompson, Samuel Vriezen, Emmanuelle Waeckerlé, Andrew Weathers, Michael Winter, Daniel James Wolf, and pieces created by present and older members of the ensemble: Alexis Porfiriadis, Fotis Lazidis, Ioanna Valsamara, Kostas Chatzikostis, Vassilis Chatzimakris, Yorgos Holopoulos. The ensemble has so far released four recordings as parts of independent music collections. Their first released recording is a 5-minute free improvisation session included in the 6th volume of the Protos Orofos limited edition compilations titled: Various – Protos Orofos – 6 (2014). The next two, m4a(2,12), released in 2020, and Διαδωμάτια (6daEXIt Improvisation Ensemble Female Part), released in 2021 are included in 2 digital music compilations by the independent label 1tracktape: “blue series | Dec 30 | contemporary dilemma” (2020), “that sounds greek to me | Apr 27 | muses & sirens” (2021), respectively. Their most recent recording (what is left in Thessaloniki) is one of the four performances of the title-piece composed by Emmanuelle Waeckerlé included in the CD: emmanuelle waeckerlé, what is left if we aren't the world, released by Edition Wandelweiser Records (2026). The number of the ensemble’s members vary according to particular projects and specific performance goals.
