Acute Inflections is an American jazz and R&B duo composed of vocalist Elasea Douglas and upright bassist Sadiki Pierre. Based in New York City, the duo formed in 2013 and is known for performing reimagined standards, original songs, and live storytelling at venues across the United States.[1][2]
History
Douglas and Pierre met in Brooklyn after Pierre attended a Broadway show in which Douglas was performing; they began performing together as Acute Inflections in 2013.[1] Douglas is a vocalist, songwriter, and actress who appeared in the original Broadway cast of the musical Fela! (2009). Pierre is an upright bassist whose playing draws on jazz, classical, Latin, reggae, and rhythm and blues.[2]
Music
Acute Inflections's repertoire combines reimagined standards, original songs, and improvisational audience interaction, with an emphasis on stripped-down vocal-and-bass arrangements.[3][4] Reviewers have noted the duo's reinterpretations of popular material, including a set of Bob Marley songs on the 2021 album 400.[3]
Discography
Media appearances
The duo wrote and performed an original song for the "Sound of Soul Food" episode (2021) of the cooking competition series The Great Soul Food Cook-Off.[7] They have also appeared on NPR's Live Sessions.[8]
Touring
Acute Inflections tours nationally with a concert series titled Soulful Sounds, a candlelit show format combining live jazz and R&B with comedy and audience storytelling.[9][10] The duo's performances have been reviewed in cities including Kansas City[9] and Syracuse.[10]
