Al Talh (Arabic: الطلح) was a minor historical branch associated with the Al-Maadeed tribe of Qatar. The group is traditionally linked to the wider Banu Tamim tribal confederation and is mentioned primarily in oral genealogical traditions describing tribal structures in Qatar during the late Ottoman period.
The branch is described as having existed as a small family-based lineage within the Al-Maadeed tribal structure before eventually disappearing as a distinct male line.
Tribal affiliation
Al Talh is considered by some genealogical traditions to have been a minor branch of the Al-Maadeed tribe, a Tamimi tribal group historically present in Qatar and across parts of the eastern Arabian Peninsula. Within Bedouin tribal organization, smaller branches often formed around a limited number of closely related families and could later merge into larger tribal units or lose their separate identity.
Historical context
Members of the Al-Maadeed tribe participated alongside other Qatari tribal groups during the Battle of Al Wajba in 1893. The conflict occurred between local Qatari forces and Ottoman troops and was led by Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern Qatar.
According to local oral traditions, a man associated with the Al Talh branch was known by the nickname Al-Deech (derived from the Arabic word dīk, meaning “rooster”). The nickname is described in family accounts as referencing bravery and aggressive fighting in battle. Animal-based nicknames were common in Arabian tribal warfare and often symbolized courage or combativeness.
Decline
In tribal genealogical narratives, Al Talh is sometimes described as having disappeared as a distinct branch. In Bedouin genealogical terminology, this typically indicates that the branch no longer maintained a surviving male lineage carrying the family name. Descendants may still exist through female lines or through assimilation into other branches of the tribe.
