Ali Muhammad Ali (born 7 June 1966),[1] popularly known as Ali M. Ali, is a Nigerian veteran journalist, public relations practitioner, and media manager.[4] He is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), having been appointed to the position by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023.[5][6]

Early life and education

Ali was born on 7 June 1966 in Kano, Nigeria.[1] He attended Jakara Primary School in Kano state and had a brief primary stint at St. George's School in Lagos.[1] He completed his secondary education at Rumfa College, Kano, before proceeding to Bayero University Kano, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.[1] He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication from Bayero University Kano and a graduate degree in International Affairs from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.[2]

Career

Ali began his media career in the late 1980s writing for The Guardian during his university days.[1] Over a journalism career spanning over three decades, he held key editorial and executive management roles across several major Nigerian daily newspapers,[3] including:

  • Editor of Sunday Triumph, Kano[1]
  • Pioneer Group Politics Editor at The Independent[1]
  • Political Editor and Associate Editor at ThisDay[1]
  • Editor at Leadership[7]
  • Chief Executive Officer of Peoples Daily[1]
  • Associate Editor and senior editorial manager at Daily Trust[3]

He has also served as Media Adviser to the state governors of Kano and Bauchi states.[1]

News Agency of Nigeria

On 19 October 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Ali as the Managing Director/CEO of the News Agency of Nigeria.[5] During his administration, he spearheaded digital transformation initiatives, introduced solar power infrastructure across agency operations, and championed local content initiatives including local-language coverage and national voter education compendiums.[8][9][10]
