Allen Page (born Allen Wingate) was an American rock and roll and rockabilly musician who recorded for Moon Records of Memphis, Tennessee between 1957 and 1960. He also recorded unissued sessions for Sun Records under his birth name. His recording "Dateless Night" (Moon 302, 1958) has been covered by Alex Chilton, Tav Falco, and The Nomads, and his unissued Sun Records material has been released on Bear Family Records compilations.
Biography and Recordings
Born Allen Wingate in Daytona Beach, Florida,[1] he relocated to Memphis and became associated with Moon Records, an independent rockabilly label operated by Cordell Jackson (born Cordell Miller).[2]
He also recorded sessions for Sun Records under his birth name Alan Wingate, though these recordings were not issued during his lifetime.[3] He performed and recorded under the name Allen Page, and was a member of The Big Four, who served as Moon Records' house backing group.[4] He is documented as a vocalist, guitarist, bassist, steel guitarist, and songwriter.[1]
Wingate's first recording as Allen Page was "Honeysuckle" b/w "High School Sweater," released in 1957 as Moon 301, credited to Allen Page & The Crowns with The Moonbeams.[1] His second single, "Dateless Night" b/w "I Wish You Were Wishing," was released in October 1958 as Moon 302, credited to Allen Page with The Deltones. "Dateless Night" was written by Cordell Jackson under her pseudonym Cordell Miller.[2] A third single, "She's The One That's Got It" b/w "Sugar Tree," followed in December 1958 as Moon 303. A fourth single, "Oh! Baby" b/w "I Wish You Were Wishing," was released in June 1960 as Moon 307, credited to Allen Page with Sandy & Sue & The Big Four.[1]
Sun Records sessions (unissued)
Wingate also recorded sessions for Sun Records in Memphis under his birth name, though the recordings were not released commercially during his lifetime. Three tracks — "What Else Could I Do?", "Should Be You", and "Rainin' the Blues" — credited to Alan Wingate, were subsequently issued on the Bear Family Records compilation That'll Flat Git It! Vol. 17: Rockabilly From the Vaults of Sun Records (BCD 16405) as tracks 5, 17, and 29 respectively.[3][1]
Legacy
"Dateless Night" has been covered by Alex Chilton as "Stranded on a Dateless Night" for his 1979 album Like Flies on Sherbert.[2][5], as well as by Tav Falco in 1987.[2] The Nomads recorded it as "Stranded on a Dateless Night" in 1994.[2]
"She's The One That's Got It" has appeared on several rockabilly compilation albums, including A Rocket In My Pocket (Ace Records, CDCHD 1268, 2010)[6] and Keb Darge & Little Edith's Legendary Wild Rockers 2.[6]
