Always Home (simplified Chinese: 树下有片红房子; traditional Chinese: 樹下有片紅房子; pinyin: Shù Xià Yǒu Piàn Hóng Fángzi, literally "There's a Red House Under the Tree") is a Chinese youth drama series that premiered on Tencent Video on February 15, 2025. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Douban Reading author Xiao Ge, the series is directed by Zhang Xiao'an and stars Zhai Xiaowen, Zhou Keyu, Yang Xizi, and He Qiu.
The series follows a group of young people who grew up together in a hospital staff residential compound, including Jing Qichi, Song Cong, Chen Huan'er, and Qi Qi, as they navigate all the important milestones of their lives, supporting each other through school, work, and the pursuit of their dreams.
Plot
In the summer of 2007, sixteen-year-old Chen Huan'er (Yang Xizi) moves from her small hometown of Sishui to the big city of Tianhe due to her mother's job transfer, settling in a hospital staff residential compound. There, she meets Jing Qichi (Zhai Xiaowen), a soccer-loving teenager, and Song Cong (Zhou Keyu), an academic achiever. Chen Huan'er adapts to her new environment with optimism and cheerfulness, witnessing a series of life-changing events including Song Cong's transfer to another school due to his mother's paralysis and Jing Qichi's abandonment of his soccer dreams after an injury.
In their senior year of high school, Jing Qichi suffers a breakdown after his father dies in the line of duty. Chen Huan'er encourages him by sharing her own childhood experience with illness, and the two end up attending the same university. However, a series of misunderstandings prevent them from becoming a couple. After graduation, Huan'er chooses to pursue graduate studies while Jing Qichi moves to Beijing for work. The two finally transition from friends to long-distance lovers. Later, Chen Huan'er returns to school to continue her research, and Jing Qichi also returns to the city where Huan'er lives.

Filming
On January 22, 2024, the series officially began production; on April 22, it wrapped filming. Filming locations were in Fuzhou and Pingtan.

The Paper commented: "Always Home waves the flag of nostalgia, with the hospital staff residential compound from the 1990s showing carefully designed aging effects on every peeling wall, bringing people back to their childhood and teenage years, with young actors delivering natural and endearing performances and a relaxed, authentic plot. This series contains much genuine emotion in its nostalgic youth setting, and with the production team 'recruiting' millennium-era cassette tapes and pagers as extras, it indeed manages to squeeze out another wave of generational tears. This is what it means to achieve much with little—a modest production that has won the love and support of many viewers. The series is representative of the youth campus genre, a track that 'produces talent every year' and belongs to the evergreen competitive landscape. The series responds to Chinese audiences' unchanging nostalgic sentiment—lost youth and childhood always have a filter of time that makes them constantly fresh and unforgettable, especially poignant when looking back from the perspective of working adults sandwiched between caring for the elderly and raising children in the 2020s."
