Astra Protocol 2 is a 2022 text-based Space flight simulator game developed by British indie Studio Slice Bar Games.[1]. In the game, players command a space-faring craft on a search and rescue mission to uncover the mystery behind a signal known as the Astra Protocol[2]. The game is controlled entirely through typed commands and a retro cassette futurism-inspired interface modelled after 1980s computer terminals, accompanied by an external operations manual pdf[3].

Gameplay

Astra Protocol 2 is played through a text parser interface, requiring players to type commands to control various systems of their spacecraft. These systems are divided into modules: HELM controls engine and navigation, ENGINEERING monitors ship status, SCIENCE allows scanning of planets and detection of distress beacons, and ORDNANCE manages weapons including torpedoes, mines, and lasers. Each playthrough generates a procedurally randomized star system, affecting the starting conditions and encounters.[3]

Development

Astra Protocol 2 was developed by UK-based indie studio Slice Bar Games. According to the developers, the original Astra Protocol began as a technical challenge to create a game requiring no external libraries or resources, with all assets generated at runtime. Building on that foundation, Slice Bar Games set out to make a larger and more expansive sequel, dropping the no-resources constraint and expanding the range of ship systems and gameplay mechanics available to the player.

The game was released on Steam on December 1, 2022, and has received multiple updates since launch, including overhauled star-fighter AI, new space station mechanics, and an anniversary patch in December 2025 which introduced a new rendering framework with CRT monitor visual effects such as vignette and radiation distortion.

Predecessor

Astra Protocol 2 is a sequel to Astra Protocol, an earlier and lesser-known title by Slice Bar Games released for free on itch.io. The original game was conceived primarily as a programming exercise, and therefore built entirely in C# with no external libraries, keeping the program size under 300 KB[4]. Its gameplay focused on pure survival: players managed fuel, shields, and weapons for as long as possible, with no overarching mission or narrative goal.

Astra Protocol 2 expanded significantly on this concept, introducing a structured search-and-rescue mission, procedurally generated star systems, a modular ship control system, and a far more detailed interface. The developers have noted that several ideas were left out of the first game due to scope, and the sequel was built to incorporate them[5]
