Md. Babul Miah (Bengali: মোঃ বাবুল মিয়া; born 25 October 1998) is a Bangladeshi climate scientist, academic, and politician. He is currently a doctoral research fellow in South Korea, focusing on climate modeling, extreme weather events, and the application of machine learning to climate sciences. He is also actively involved in Bangladesh politics, serving as the member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Diaspora Alliance in South Korea.

Education and Research

Miah completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Environmental Science and Disaster Management from Gopalganj Science and Technology University in Bangladesh, graduating in March 2022. In September 2023, he received the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) Scholarship awarded by the government of the Republic of Korea to pursue an integrated M.S.-Ph.D. program. He serves as a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Climate, Environment and Energy's Climate Modeling Lab at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) in Jeonju, South Korea.

His primary research areas and academic interests encompass several dimensions of climate science. In the field of Earth System and climate modeling, his work includes the development and application of Earth System Models (ESM), specifically working with ESM4, and WRF models. His research into climate extremes involves investigating the reversibility of temperature and precipitation extremes, alongside studying ocean-atmospheric teleconnections to drought. Additionally, his work in monsoon dynamics focuses on studying ocean-atmospheric dynamics relating to the Global Monsoon, Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Asian Monsoon systems.

Career

Miah has served in multiple academic, administrative, and research capacities internationally. He is the founder and director of the Climate and Ocean Modeling Lab, a position he has held since September 2024. Parallel to this role, he has operated as a research scientist at the Climate Modeling Lab at Jeonbuk National University since September 2023.

In Bangladesh, Miah is affiliated with the Research and Skill Development Society (RSDS) in Dhaka, where he serves as an assistant director and has worked as a lecturer since 2020, teaching courses in Python, CDO, SPSS, and ArcGIS. He is also a scientist at the Center for Weather and Climate Research and holds a professional affiliation as a Life Member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Political Career

In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Miah is an active participant in diaspora politics associated with democratic movements in Bangladesh. He served as a coordinator for the Students Against Discrimination movement, which led the July Uprising in Bangladesh, where he worked to connect and engage the diaspora community. He entered central committee structures when he served as a Central Member of the National Diaspora Committee for the Jatiya Nagorik Committee (National Citizen Committee) from February 9, 2025.[1], to October 4, 2025. Following this tenure, he was appointed as the Member Secretary of the Central Convening Committee for the NCP Diaspora Alliance in South Korea on October 4, 2025. He expanded his political portfolio on January 13, 2026, by joining the National Citizen Party (NCP) as a member of its Central Election Branding Sub-Committee.
