BalObiad (also transliterated as Belabid or Al-Bal'ubayd; Arabic: بلعبيد) is a prominent Arab tribe indigenous to Southern Arabia, primarily inhabiting the border regions between the Shabwah and Hadhramaut governorates of Yemen. The tribe has historically been a key political and social force in the region.[1]

Lineage and History

The tribe traces its patrilineal descent to the Himyar branch of the Qahtanite Arabs. Historically, BalObiad is the leading constituent of the "Dhayb Sa'd" tribal confederation, which also includes the Nu'man and Sa'd tribes.[2]

Geography

The tribe's ancestral territories are strategically located, spanning diverse topographical features:

  • Wadi Arma: The historical, political, and agricultural center of the tribe.[1]
  • Wadi Dahr: A significant valley and administrative district in Shabwah, predominantly inhabited by BalObiad clans. It is located east of Arma and flows towards the desert.[4]
  • Sawt Bal'ubayd: A vast strategic plateau named after the tribe, serving as a vital transit route between the interior and the coast.[5]
  • Wadi Jardan: Home to several branches, including the Al-Barayk and Al-Badahri.

Tribal Structure

The BalObiad tribe is organized into three main branches (stems):

  1. Salm: The largest branch, comprising numerous clans such as Al-Hamim, Al-Bakrash, Al-Bahahil, and the Al-Abd Al-Haq scholars.
  2. Ba Hayyan: Includes the Al-Amr and Al-Hayd branches, along with the nomadic Al-Kurb tribe.[4]
