Benefact Group is a United Kingdom–based independent financial services organisation comprising a collection of specialist insurance, investment, advisory, and financial businesses. The Group is notable for its ownership structure—being wholly owned by the charitable Benefact Trust—and for its stated purpose of donating all available profits to charitable causes.[1]

Formerly known as Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, the organisation rebranded to Benefact Group in 2022 to reflect its broader portfolio and philanthropic mission.[2]

History

The Group traces its origins to 1887 through its predecessor, Ecclesiastical Insurance. The modern corporate entity was incorporated on 26 April 1983 and subsequently operated as Ecclesiastical Holdings Public Limited Company (1983–1989) and Ecclesiastical Insurance Group PLC (1989–2022) before adopting the name Benefact Group PLC on 7 March 2022.[2]

The rebrand was part of a strategic effort to unify the Group's expanding portfolio of specialist financial businesses and highlight its philanthropic identity.

Ownership and governance

Benefact Group is wholly owned by the Benefact Trust, one of the UK's largest grant‑making charities. The Trust has awarded more than £310 million in grants since 1972 to good causes and community initiatives across the UK and Ireland.[3]

The Group's registered office is located at Benefact House, 2000 Pioneer Avenue, Gloucester Business Park, Brockworth, Gloucester.[2]

Operations

Benefact Group operates as a collection of specialist financial services businesses, including:

  • General Insurance – covering niche and specialist markets such as heritage properties, charities, and faith organisations.
  • Investment management – with a focus on ethical and responsible investment strategies.
  • Broking and advisory services – supporting clients delivering advice and products adapted for specialist markets

Each business within the Group operates with a high degree of sector specialisation, contributing to the Group's reputation for expertise in areas such as heritage protection, ethical investment, and community‑focused financial services.[1]

Philanthropy

Movement for Good

One of the Group's most visible charitable initiatives is the Movement for Good programme, which distributes donations to charities, community interest companies (CICs), and non‑profits nominated by the public. The programme channels the Group's available profits into grants and awards designed to support a wide range of social causes.[4]

Charity Support

Beyond financial donations, Benefact Group offer a range of support and resources for charities through its Charity Support programme. Comprising of webinars, online resources and forums the Charity Support programme has a range of support for charities and works with experts from across the sector to provide advice on topics coming from charities.[5]

Charitable impact

Through Benefact Trust and its own initiatives, the Group supports projects addressing poverty, community development, education, heritage preservation, and social outreach. Examples highlighted by the Group include agricultural programmes in Canada, literacy initiatives for children, and conservation volunteering.[4]
