Benjamin Melvin Berry (born September 21, 1923) is an American World War II veteran who served in the United States Army during the European Theater of Operations. He participated in the Normandy campaign and the Battle of the Bulge as part of the 863rd Quartermaster Fumigation and Bath Company. In recognition of his service, Berry has received several honors, including the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and France's Legion of Honour.[1][2]

Early life

Berry was born in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, and attended Abington High School, graduating in 1943.[1]

Military service

Berry was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and assigned to the 863rd Quartermaster Fumigation and Bath Company.[3] He served in Europe, arriving in France following the Normandy landings and supporting front-line troops. His unit operated during major campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge.[1]

Post-war life

After the war, Berry returned to Philadelphia, where he built a career in the paperhanging trade. He remained active in veterans organizations and has spoken publicly about his wartime experiences.[1]

Honors

In June 2021, Berry was awarded the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for his World War II service.[1] He was inducted into the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps Hall of Fame in 2022.[3] On March 18, 2024, he received France's Legion of Honor at a ceremony in Philadelphia.[2]
