Big Picture Distribution is a Canadian independent film distribution and marketing company founded by filmmakers Ron Dias and Joanne Jansen, alongside Gavin Sheppard and Craig Fleming. The company was formed following the production and release challenges of the feature film Morningside and focuses on community-driven releases and alternative distribution models for independent cinema.

Big Picture Distribution emerged in late 2023 during the production of Morningside, after the film lost its distributor shortly before principal photography. The loss created a financing gap and temporarily jeopardized tax credits and bank financing. Dias and Jansen secured additional funding through private support and later partnerships, allowing the film to proceed.

The experience led the filmmakers to identify what they described as a gap in the Canadian distribution market, particularly for culturally specific and independent films, prompting the creation of Big Picture.

Morningside is set in the Morningside neighbourhood of Scarborough, Ontario, and follows seven interconnected characters. The film features a predominantly Canadian cast, including Fefe Dobson, Oluniké Adeliyi, Lovell Adams-Gray, Kiana Madeira and Alex Mallari Jr.

For its Canadian theatrical release, Dias and Jansen partnered with distributor Jim Sherry of Sherry Media, while overseeing the film’s marketing strategy. The film opened on February 21, 2025, at Cineplex theatres in Scarborough and later expanded nationwide.Morningside earned over $100,000 at the Canadian box office during its approximately 10-week theatrical run making the highest grossing Indie Canadian movie.

In 2026, the BBC and its streaming service BBC iPlayer acquired U.K. linear and streaming rights to Morningside, with a release scheduled for April 1, 2026. Big Picture managed the U.K. rollout and explored a potential theatrical release.

Big Picture positions itself as a filmmaker-led distributor, emphasizing hands-on marketing, community engagement, shorter licensing terms, and more equitable revenue sharing. Rather than managing large slates, the company plans to focus on a limited number of projects.

Big Picture has been cited in reporting on the rise of self-distribution and microdistribution in Canada, as filmmakers increasingly bypass traditional distributors amid declining domestic investment and shrinking theatrical windows.^[1][2]
