Bmbu (musician)
Bmbu is a lo-fi / Boom-Bap / hip-hop producer and beatmaker, based in the United States.[1][2]
Career
2008-to-2010: The Early Years
Between 2008 and 2010, Bmbu released multiple mixtape projects via SoundCloud and Bandcamp, which led up to his first true releases, "Infinite Pt. 1"[3] and "Infinite Pt. 2",[4] released in late 2011 and early 2012 respectively.
In 2013, he released "Elevator Music",[5] a project that introduced him to the international underground beat scene of the early 2010s.
Bmbu followed up his early albums with the "Unheard" EP[6] and the full-length "The Language That You Dream In" in 2013.[7] That same year, he formed the production duo BmbuWEST with producer FortuneWest,[8] and together, they released four projects in 2013 alone,[9] contributing to a total of six releases by Bmbu in a single calendar year.
In 2014, he released the full-length album "reBuilder"[10] and the EP "The C.R.A.T.E. Escape",[11] alongside BmbuWEST’s "The Diversity Tape".[12] Later on in the year, he produced the track "GO OFF (A PRELUDE TO (R)EVOLUTION)" for Brooklyn artist LATASHÁ,[13][14] that was featured on her album "PAST LIFE".[15] Bmbu was also featured on "Sinoptic International"'s hip-hop compilation, "Pure Dopeness 12" in 2014.[16]
Outside the five-track project "…So My Dad Can Retire",[17] Bmbu largely took a step back from solo work to focus on collaboration for a year, before returning with "hiatUs" in 2016.[18] In between the two projects, he co-produced Rapper Cody Nash's "Bamboo Fortunes"[19] and began working closely with Lizea Harper, fully producing her debut project "Build New" in late 2015.[20] He was also once again featured on a "Sinoptic International" compilation, in "Pure Dopeness 19" that same year.[21]
2017-to-2019: The "Vinyl Digital" Years
Following the release of "hiatUs", Bmbu signed with the German record label Vinyl Digital.[22] During this period, he released "Atlantis"[23] and "Cloud City"[24] in 2017, followed by "#throwback"[25] in 2018—his first project to receive a vinyl release.[26][27]
He once again collaborated with R&B artist Lizea Harper on "The Dive" (2018)[28], as well as with British R&B artist SueLily, producing her single "Two Minds" on the 2018 project CURRENT.[29][30][29] Several tracks from his collaborations with Harper were later featured in television series such as Tell Me Lies (Hulu)[31] and The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix),[32] and received airplay on MTV Brazil (De Férias Com o Ex).[33]
In early 2019, Bmbu co-produced Sudo Williams’ debut album "You, Me, Them",[34][35] and released five four-track EPs in a series he called "Interludes",[36][37][38][39][40] followed by two additional short-form projects in 2020.[41][42]
2023-to-2025: "Quiet Work" and "deadbeats"
After an extended hiatus that ended when we has released from his label, Bmbu released a string of singles in 2023 that collectively formed the "Quiet Work" series.[43][44][45][46]. More singles followed, and in late 2024, he released two full-length collections. [47][48] Eight more singles followed over the course of 2025, and toward the end of 2025, Bmbu released four six-track EPs titled deadbeat 1–4, distributed exclusively through Bandcamp.[49][50][51][52]
