BongoHive is Zambia's first tech and innovation hub, with its headquarters in Lusaka. Founded in 2011,[1] the organization acts as an entrepreneurship support entity, startup incubator, and venture accelerator.[2][3]

History

BongoHive was established in May 2011 by Lukonga Lidunda, Silimesii Mwewa, Simunza Muyangana, and Bart Cornille. This initiative arose from a shared observation among local technology enthusiasts that Zambian software developers, students, and entrepreneurs lacked access to shared workspace, reliable high-speed internet, and business development support.[4][5][6]

Operations and Programs

BongoHive operates a range of programs tailored to various stages of the venture development lifecycle, from ideation to scale-up:

  • Discover: An introductory program curated to help new, and aspiring entrepreneurs evaluate business ideas, conduct market validation, and understand fundamental business model concepts.[7]
  • Launch: A market-entry accelerator program focusing on post-revenue startups seeking to refine their business models.
  • Thrive: An investor-readiness program designed for scaling startups preparing to secure venture funding and execute long-term operational expansion.[8]
  • BongoHive Consult: The corporate and technical innovation division of the organization. It collaborates with commercial enterprises, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government agencies to build custom digital solutions, facilitate innovation challenges, and conduct human-centered design workshops.[6][9]

In addition to venture support, BongoHive regularly hosts technical bootcamps, hackathons, and digital skills workshops aimed at addressing software talent gaps in local industries.

Impact and Ecosystem Development

As a pioneer in Zambia's startup ecosystem, BongoHive has played a key role in advocating for policies supporting local technology talent and young entrepreneurs. The hub has partnered with numerous corporate entities and international development stakeholders, including the Indigo Trust, Google for Entrepreneurs, MTN Zambia, and Cavmont Bank, to implement technology initiatives and build digital infrastructure in the region. Since its inception, BongoHive has supported hundreds of tech ventures and entrepreneurs. Notable startups nurtured through BongoHive's programs and hackathons include agricultural technology platform AgriPredict and agritech e-commerce marketplace eMsika.[10]
