Brian Bent

Brian Bent (born December 1965) is an American artist whose work explores themes of motion, surf culture, and mid-century Southern California aesthetics. He has been featured in publications including The Surfer’s Journal, New American Paintings, and international editorial magazines, and his work has been included in museum exhibitions focused on surf culture and coastal art.

Early life and background

Brian Bent was born in Inglewood, California, and grew up in Hermosa Beach in the South Bay region of Los Angeles before relocating to South Orange County in the early 1970s.[1] His early exposure to surfing and skateboarding, along with influences from mid-century Southern California car culture, contributed to the development of his artistic interests.[2]

Artistic work

Bent’s work is characterized by gestural painting techniques and imagery associated with movement, including surfers, architecture, vehicles, and figures in motion. His visual style draws on influences from surf publications, mid-century illustration, and Southern California design traditions.[3]

In 2003, Bent was featured in New American Paintings (Issue 49), a publication highlighting emerging artists in the United States.[4] His work has also been the subject of editorial features examining his multidisciplinary practice and its relationship to surf culture and handcrafted design.[5][6]
