Dr. Brian Real

Brian Real is an assistant professor in the School of Information Science at the University of Kentucky, where his work focuses on information policy, digital access, and the role of libraries in supporting communities.

Early life and education

Brian holds a Ph.D. in Information Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park (2015), where his research focused on public policy, political pressures, and American film preservation. He also earned a Master of Library Science (2011) from the same institution, specializing in archives, records, and information management. Earlier, he completed a Master’s in Communication at Johns Hopkins University (2008), with a thesis on revitalizing historic movie theaters as community nonprofits. Brian began his academic career at the University of Maryland, College Park, earning dual bachelor’s degrees in English and Italian language, literature, and culture (2004).[1]

Career

Dr. Brian Real has held a range of academic and professional roles in library and information science. He served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, College Park, teaching courses in both Film Studies and the College of Information Studies, including Public Library Seminar, Serving Information Needs, and Jim Henson: Art, Media, and Muppets from 2016 to 2018. During the same period, he was also an adjunct instructor at the Wayne State University School of Information Sciences.

Earlier in his career, he worked as a public services librarian at Calvert Library [1]. He then served as an Assistant Professor of Information and Library Science at Southern Connecticut State University from 2018 to 2022. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky of Information Science, where he continues his teaching and research.[2]

Awards and Honors

Brian Real was named a Faculty Fellow at the [[ Institute for Kentucky Spirits at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. His selection reflects the alignment of his research with the Institute’s mission, particularly his work on preserving cultural heritage materials and examining the economic and historical significance of the Kentucky bourbon industry.[3]
