Calen Jennings (known professionally as calen) is a Canadian pianist, composer, and producer based in Powell River, British Columbia. He has been active since 2008 and produces piano-based and experimental instrumental music influenced by personal experience, visual art, and nature.
Early life and background
Calen grew up in a small town in Alberta, Canada. He later moved to Vancouver before relocating to Powell River in 2019 with his partner.[1]
He has a background in multiple instruments, including piano, drums, and guitar. He has cited family influence in music, noting that his grandfather built violins, and that he performed old-time fiddle music while growing up in Alberta.[2]
Career
Calen has been active in music production and composition since 2008.
He has released two music projects:
- Music for My Cats – an EP inspired by his cats and personal experiences. One of his cats has since passed away.[1]
- Contemporary Chromatic – an EP inspired by visual art and design, including mid-century designers such as Josef Albers and Tomoko Miho.
Calen’s work has been described as piano-driven and reflective, with influences including Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti.[2]
