Collecting Cars is a British online auction platform for collectible, classic, and performance cars[1][2][3]. It is operated by The Collecting Group and is headquartered in the United Kingdom.

History

Collecting Cars was founded by Edward Lovett in 2019.[2] The company operates an online-only model, in which cars remain with their sellers during the auction period, a departure from the traditional model used by established auction houses.[1]

By 2021 the platform recorded annual sales of £135.5 million.[4] In October 2025, the platform announced it had reached $1 billion in cumulative sales.[5]

Business model

Collecting Cars uses a timed-auction model. The platform charges buyers a 7.2% premium inclusive of VAT. The platform covers cars, motorcycles, and numberplates.[3]

Notable sales

In 2021 a 433-mile McLaren P1 sold through the platform for $1,600,888, reported by Autocar as a record for an online-only collector car auction at the time. The winning bidder purchased without viewing the car in person.[6]

In October 2022, an Aston Martin DB5 was offered through the platform.[7]

In November 2023, a 1997 Ferrari F50 formerly owned by musician Rod Stewart sold for £2,940,500.[8][9][10]

In January 2025, a life-size tubular steel sculpture of a Porsche 934, created by artist Benedict Radcliffe, sold for £201,000, attracting international coverage.[11]

Other cars offered through the platform with notable provenance have included a Lamborghini Gallardo formerly owned by David Beckham,[12] and a Porsche 911 formerly owned by television presenter James May.[13][14]

The Collecting Group

The Collecting Group is the parent company of Collecting Cars and operates Watch Collecting, a platform for collectible watches launched in 2021. The group employs around 100 staff across offices in the United Kingdom, Australia, and mainland Europe.
