Coop's is an American specialty food company based in Massachusetts, producing small-batch ice cream toppings and hot chocolate mix. The company is best known for its hot fudge and caramel sauces, which are widely used as ice cream sundae toppings and have been featured in sundae recipes and guides by national food publications.[1] Distributed throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, the company supplies both retail consumers and foodservice accounts including ice cream shops, restaurants, and bakeries. Originally founded as Coop's MicroCreamery, the brand was rebranded to Coop's following an ownership change approximately in 2022, when it was acquired by a woman-owned family business. The company is a certified B Corporation and holds Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certification.

History

Coop's traces its origins to the Boston ice cream industry. The founder trained under Steve Herrell of Herrell's Ice Cream, widely credited as the originator of the mix-in ice cream concept, and operated Herrell's franchise locations in Boston, earning Boston Magazine Best of Boston recognition twelve times. While operating ice cream shops in Boston, the founder began bottling hot fudge sauce as a retail product — initially developing the packaged format to keep production staff employed during the slower winter months when ice cream shop traffic declined.[2]

The founder developed a distinctive retail jar with a trademarked decorative lid and refined the hot fudge recipe, producing what the Boston Globe described as a deep, complex sauce.[1] The jar and its decorative lid received packaging design awards, were displayed in a museum exhibition, and were featured in an international book on packaging design.[2] The brand came to wider public attention in 2012 when the Boston Globe featured it as a standout specialty food product.[1] The company developed additional products including a salted caramel sauce and Cocoa Felice, a hot chocolate mix, and expanded the hot fudge line to include a cold-brew mocha variation covered by the Boston Globe in 2018.[3] All three core topping products received sofi™ Awards from the Specialty Food Association, and distribution grew across the United States and Canada, supplying ice cream shops and restaurants in foodservice sizes alongside retail.[2][4]

Around 2022, the business was acquired by a woman-owned family business and rebranded from Coop's MicroCreamery to Coop's, relaunching at enjoycoops.com. Under current ownership the company expanded its product line — including Peppermint Hot Fudge, covered by the Boston Globe in 2025[5] — and extended distribution to the United Kingdom and South Korea. The company obtained B Corporation and WBENC certification under the current ownership. The original founder continues to operate Coop's MicroCreamery separately, selling ice cream through specialty retail stores in Massachusetts.[2]

Products and partnerships

Coop's produces handmade dessert toppings and hot chocolate mix rooted in the company's origins in the ice cream shop industry. The company describes itself as "born in an ice cream shop" and supplies its sauces to ice cream shops, restaurants, and bakeries for both retail consumers and foodservice accounts. Products contain no corn syrup, additives, or preservatives, and are certified Kosher.[2] The company's hot fudge and caramel sauces have been featured in ice cream sundae guides and vegan sundae recipes by national food and lifestyle publications.[6][7]

Current retail products include:

  • Original Hot Fudge — made with European cocoa powder and local dairy; sofi Gold Award winner
  • Mocha Hot Fudge — a cold-brew coffee variation[3]
  • Peppermint Hot Fudge[5]
  • Vegan Hot Fudge — made with coconut milk; sofi Silver Award winner and VegNews Best Ice Cream Topping 2022[8]

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, the nationally distributed specialty ice cream company, sells Coop's Salted Caramel Sauce through its website, describing it as "made in small batches by our friends at Coop's Microcreamery."[10]

Awards and recognition

The brand's core product lineup has received competitive industry recognition:

  • sofi™ Awards: The Specialty Food Association has awarded honors to three core products at the annual Fancy Food Show in New York: Gold honors to the Original Hot Fudge and Salted Caramel Sauce, and a Silver honor to the Vegan Hot Fudge. Approximately 32 Gold sofi awards are granted from more than 2,000 entries annually.[2][4]
  • Caramel sauce ranking: In a 2023 blind tasting of 14 national store-bought caramel brands conducted by Tasting Table, Coop's Salted Caramel Sauce ranked first. The publication described it as "the kind of high-quality caramel sauce you'd make at home or in a professional pastry kitchen" and concluded: "splurge on the real thing."[9]
  • Vegan product recognition: In 2022, VegNews named the Coop's Vegan Hot Fudge its Best Ice Cream Topping in the annual Best Vegan Ice Cream in America Awards, one of the largest surveys of vegan food products in the United States.[8]

The trademarked decorative lid has received packaging design awards and has been displayed in a museum exhibition and included in an international book on packaging design.[2]
