Copsa Este is a Uruguayan interdepartmental bus service division of Compañía de Ómnibus de Pando (COPSA). It was created to operate routes linking Montevideo Department with eastern Uruguay, especially Maldonado Department.
History
In 1991, following the closure of Organización Nacional de Autobuses (ONDA) and the forthcoming tendering of its routes by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Compañía de Ómnibus de Pando acquired the routes from Montevideo to Punta del Este and José Ignacio, via Piriápolis and Maldonado.[1]
Around that time, the Copsa Este division emerged to operate those routes, as well as the pre-existing 712, 713 and 9C services. After ceasing to operate from the old Control de Dante, these routes temporarily ran from Baltasar Brum Terminal, and later moved to Tres Cruces bus station once that terminal was completed.
Because they did not operate solely within the limits of the Montevideo metropolitan area, these services were classified not as suburban routes but as interdepartmental ones.
At first, services were operated by Mercedes-Benz O371RSD coaches in a blue livery, distinguishing them from the company's other operations.
Between 2008 and 2012, the Mercedes-Benz fleet was replaced by Yutong coaches. Beginning in 2022, the fleet was renewed again with vehicles from the same manufacturer.[2]
In 2021, as a consequence of the restructuring of the Metropolitan Transportation System, route 712 was reclassified within the metropolitan area up to Jaureguiberry and ceased to be operated by Copsa Este, passing instead to COPSA's suburban network.[3][4]
