Cyber Troops refers to a state-linked group or organisation operating on behalf of a government, military or political party that attempts to manipulate public opinion over social media or other forms of digital communication[1]. This can include spreading misinformation or disinformation to influence societal opinions, boasting specific political views, or engaging with a variety of different political viewpoints. Owen Thompson MP referred to this as "industrialised disinformation by state and political actors" when speaking in the UK Parliament in regards to cyber troop activity in the UK[2]. A study by two academics at Oxford University found cyber troops to be a global phenomenon.[1]
