DREAM Charter Schools is a pre-K–12 public charter school network serving students in East Harlem and the South Bronx.[3] The network operates under the authorization of the State University of New York and enrolls approximately 2,200 students across seven schools on three campuses.[4] [5]According to DREAM information, the school year runs from August through June, including a summer program offered at no cost.[6]

History

DREAM began in 1991 as Harlem RBI, when volunteers converted an abandoned lot in East Harlem into two baseball fields for local youth.[7] The organization later expanded into summer learning programs,[8] and it opened its first charter school in 2008.[9]

In 2015, DREAM opened a permanent K–8 school building at 1991 Second Avenue in East Harlem.[9] The network expanded to the Bronx with the opening of DREAM Mott Haven in 2019[10] and DREAM Highbridge in 2024.[11]

In 2025, DREAM reported that it had secured a five-year, $28 million Head Start grant to launch early childhood programs serving children from birth through age four.[12]

Campuses

DREAM operates three campuses.

  • East Harlem (Pre-K, 6-8)[13]
  • Highbridge (K-8)[14]
  • Mott Haven (K-12)[15]

Students

DREAM serves a predominately Hispanic and Black student population, with most students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Approximately 25% of students have specialized needs.[16]

Governance

The network is led by co CEOs Richard Berlin[3] and Eve Colavito.[17]

Academic Outcomes

According to DREAM’s reported data for the 2024–25 school year, 75% of students scored proficient in math and 69% in English Language Arts, higher than New York City and New York State averages.[18] [19][20]DREAM Charter High School reported a 95% graduation rate.[21]
