A digital wildfire is a fast-spreading piece of misinformation or disinformation that quickly enters collective consciousness and has real-world effects[1]. Digital wildfires are not necessarily malicious and can be created intentionally or unintentionally. They are most dangerous in situations of high tension where the propagation of accurate information cannot be fast enough to mitigate real-world effects or when spread in digital echo chambers where misinformation fits into people's pre-existing worldviews and is difficult to correct[2].
In 2013, the World Economic Forum (WEF) named digital wildfires as a major global risk in its Global Risks Eight Edition[2].
