Elsa Mora (born May 9, 1971)[1] is a Cuban-born artist (including illustrator) and curator whose work includes paper sculpture, drawing, ceramics, photography, animation, and mixed media;[2][3] she is based in the United States.

Early life and education

Mora was born in Holguín, Cuba. Sources state that she studied at the Vocational School of Arts in Holguín and later at the Professional School of Visual Arts in Camagüey.[4]

Career

Mora began exhibiting in Cuba during the 1990s. Later exhibitions took place in cities including Havana, Buenos Aires, New York, and Montreal.[1]

She emigrated to Los Angeles in 2001[5] and later relocated to Frenchtown, New Jersey.[2][4]

Mora has worked in a range of media, including paper sculpture, drawing, ceramics, photography, animation, and mixed media.[2] She began working with paper sculpture in 2008.[6] Her paper-based works have received attention for their sculptural and illustrative qualities.[3] In 2014, Mora designed a holiday card for the Museum of Modern Art.[6]

Mora served as a founding member of ArtYard, a contemporary art center in Frenchtown. She later served as its artistic director and curator.[7][8]

Personal life

Mora has a son (born 2005), who was diagnosed with autism. Mora has said she used art to work through anxiety surrounding her son's diagnosis.[5]

Work and collections

Sources describe recurring themes in Mora's work as identity, memory, transformation, and human connection.[1]

Her work is held in the collections of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Long Beach Museum of Art, and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.[9]

Mora has also worked as an illustrator for publishers and cultural institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, Chronicle Books, and Penguin Random House.
