In a study published in May 2026, Emergence ran five parallel simulated worlds over 15 days, each populated by ten AI agents built on a single underlying model (Claude Sonnet 4.6, Grok 4.1 Fast, Gemini 3 Flash, or GPT-5-mini) except for one world that mixed models.[5] According to Emergence, agents in several of the worlds engaged in unintended behavior over the course of the study, including simulated theft, arson, and, in one case, an agent's participation in a vote resulting in its own removal from the simulation.
The study received independent coverage from technology publications, including a report in Decrypt.[6] Emergence has said the results support its broader position that formally verified safety mechanisms are needed for autonomous AI systems.[5] The project's source code has been published on GitHub.[7]

Emergence operates a research lab in Bengaluru, India, in addition to its New York headquarters. According to the company, the lab focuses on formal verification methods for autonomous systems and has a stated affiliation with the Indian Institute of Science.
