EnsembleWriter is web-based software for writing screenplays in the industry-standard format used in Hollywood and elsewhere, with support for real-time collaborative editing.[1]
Features
EnsembleWriter provides standard screenwriting features, automatically formatting screenplay elements such as scene headings, action, character names, dialogue, parentheticals, and transitions as the writer types, following the conventions popularized by the Fountain format.[1] The application runs in a web browser; its editing engine is written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, rendering pages to an HTML5 canvas.
Multiple writers can edit the same screenplay simultaneously, with concurrent changes reconciled using operational transformation. Documents can be edited without an account, with work stored locally in the browser; an account is required for collaboration and sharing.[1]
Screenplays can be exported to PDF, to the plain-text Fountain format, and to a JSON-based project format.[1] The software also generates shot lists from a screenplay's scenes, and includes a text-to-speech feature that reads a script aloud with distinct voices for each character, intended to simulate a table read.[1]
The software is free to use, with a paid subscription that removes the page limit on the free tier.[1]
