Erika Corina Urtecho Echeverría (born May 15, 1981) is a Honduran politician serving as a deputy in the National Congress of Honduras for the department of Gracias a Dios, representing the Liberal Party of Honduras. Since January 2026, she has served as First Vice President of the National Congress for the 2026–2030 legislative term.^[1]. In addition to her congressional role, she serves as Vice President of the Central Executive Council of the Liberal Party of Honduras^[2]. She is considered one of the first Miskito women to attain senior political office at the national level in Honduras.^[3]

Urtecho was born in Ahuas^[3], in the department of Gracias a Dios. She is the daughter of former congresswoman Carolina Echeverría and retired colonel and attorney Andrés Urtecho Jeamborde. Before entering politics, she worked for more than a decade at the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) in the area of communications and institutional relations. She earned a degree in Marketing and International Business and a master’s degree in Business Management from the Central American Technological University (UNITEC).^[4]

Her entry into national politics came in 2021 following the assassination of her mother, who had been a congressional candidate for Gracias a Dios and a supporter of Yani Rosenthal’s presidential candidacy within the Liberal Party of Honduras. After her mother’s death, Urtecho was initially reluctant to enter politics and declined the idea of running for office^[4]. She was later persuaded by Mardel Wood Madsin, who had served as her mother’s alternate deputy during her tenure in the 2006-2010 legislative term and was running again along with her mother in 2021, as well as by community leaders from Gracias a Dios and members of the Liberal Party, to accept the candidacy.^[5] Following their encouragement^[6], she agreed to run alongside Mardel as the Liberal Party ticket in the department and was subsequently elected to the National Congress^[7]

As a legislator, Urtecho has focused on issues concerning Indigenous peoples, the development of the department of Gracias a Dios, and the political representation of the Miskito community within State institutions.
