"Every Hour" is the first track by American rapper Kanye West from his ninth studio album, Jesus Is King (2019). West co-wrote the song alongside Benjamin Scholefield and Federico Vindver. West produced the track alongside the latter and Budgie. Even though West is credited as the main artist it contains no vocals from him and the entire song is sung by the Sunday Service Choir.

Background and recording

"Every Hour" is a gospel track that features no vocals from West, with it consisting of a hymn from the group Sunday Service Choir.[1][2] However, West wrote the song alongside Benjamin Scholefield and Federico Vindver.[3] The Sunday Service Choir director Jason White revealed that he worked on the song vocally.[4] The song was produced by West, alongside Budgie and Vindver.[3] West had previously sampled a choir rendition of the Holy Name of Mary Choral Family's recording "Sermon (He'll Give Us What We Really Need)" on the track "On Sight" from his sixth studio album Yeezus (2013), and the original version of the recording was included on Budgie's album The Gospel According To Budgie II (2012).[5][6] The position of the song as the opener to Jesus Is King replaced "Up from the Ashes" at this position on the album.[7][8]

Promotion and reception

West accompanied the Sunday Service Choir in a performance of the song at a field in Baton Rouge on November 1, 2019, with the field having been provided by Bethany Church.[9] On November 17 of that year, a conductor led the Sunday Service Choir into performing it during a concert at Lakewood Church.[10] Following the release of Jesus Is King, "Every Hour" debuted at number 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[11] The song's entry gave the Sunday Service Choir their first appearance on the Hot 100.[12]
