The Faith–AI Covenant is an international multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at developing voluntary ethical principles to guide the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). Led by the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities (IAFSC) in partnership with technology advisory firm Precognition, the initiative brings together technology developers and global faith leaders to develop shared ethical principles for AI.[1]

History and roundtables

The Faith–AI Covenant project held its first roundtable on 30 April 2026 in New York City.[2] The event was co-chaired by Dana Humaid Al Marzouqi, Chief Executive of the IAFSC, and Baroness Joanna Shields, CEO of Precognition and a life peer in the UK House of Lords.[3]

The initial meeting included representatives from AI development companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, alongside leaders from diverse religious traditions, including the Hindu Temple Society of North America, the Bahaʼi International Community, the Sikh Coalition, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and representatives of Jewish communities.[3][4]

The organizers announced a global roadmap of regional roundtables throughout 2026 and 2027, with events planned for Beijing, Bengaluru, Nairobi, Paris, Singapore, and Rome, culminating in a final summit in Abu Dhabi.[3][5]

Origins and influences

Following a November 2025 summit in Rome on “Child Dignity in the Artificial Intelligence Era,” at which delegates presented a unified declaration on AI safety and vulnerable groups to Pope Leo XIV,[6] the Faith–AI Covenant project was developed by the IAFSC and Precognition as a broader interfaith framework for AI ethics.[2]

Objectives and framework

The Faith–AI Covenant aims to build a non-binding, voluntary framework of shared principles and pledges for technology companies, faith institutions, and policymakers regarding AI safety and human dignity.[3] Organizers have said the initiative is intended to complement, rather than replace, existing legislative and regulatory frameworks.[5] Writing in CNET, Shields described the initiative as a response to what she characterised as an absence of moral frameworks capable of keeping pace with AI development.[7]

The framework is expected to address areas including algorithmic transparency, protection of vulnerable digital users, and appropriate limits on AI deployment in contexts involving spiritual or moral guidance.[8] The Covenant text is expected to be formally adopted at a concluding summit in Abu Dhabi in 2027.[8]
