Frida Hartz ( born 25 November 1960 Mexico City ) is a Mexican photographer and photojournalist recognized for her work reflecting sociopolitical realities, especially those of indigenous women.

Life

She studied to become a visual arts teacher at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura, where she combined various artistic disciplines.

She began with street and social photography, especially of women, indigenous women, and in social mobilizations:[1]

She began her professional career in 1984, the year her first photographic work was published, and the newspaper La Jornada, where she worked as a photojournalist for seventeen years.[2][3] In 1988, she was appointed director of photography, becoming the first woman to hold the position at the newspaper and one of the few in Mexico.[4] In 2001, she left the newspaper to work for El Sur . She soon left this newspaper to continue her career as a freelance photographer, contributing to various publications in Germany and New York .

She participated in the collective work Two Worlds Under the Same Roof. Domestic Work and Non-Discrimination , by the National Council to Prevent Discrimination , which was published in 2012.[5]

As an activist, she belongs to the Socialist Feminists group within the National Pact of Women in the Struggle for Non-Violence, where she denounces and raises awareness of violence against women.[6] She supported the founding of the Museum of Women.[7]
