GOAT Network is a Bitcoin Layer 2 blockchain project focused on off-chain execution, Bitcoin settlement, and decentralized application infrastructure. The network is designed to use zero-knowledge proofs, decentralized sequencing, and BitVM2-related bridge architecture to support applications that settle through Bitcoin-based dispute and exit mechanisms.
The project was introduced in 2024 by ZKM, a zero-knowledge infrastructure project associated with Kevin Liu, co-founder of Metis. GOAT Network has been described as part of the broader development of Bitcoin Layer 2 networks, Bitcoin decentralized finance, and zero-knowledge proof systems for blockchain scaling.[1][2]
History
GOAT Network was publicly announced in 2024 in connection with ZKM. The Block reported that ZKM planned to launch GOAT Network as a Bitcoin Layer 2 solution after raising $5 million in a pre-Series A funding round at a $50 million valuation.[1]
In 2025, GOAT Network launched public testnet work related to BitVM2 and zero-knowledge proof generation. Reporting syndicated by Yahoo Finance described the project as a Bitcoin Layer 2 network using real-time zero-knowledge proofs and decentralized sequencer nodes.[2]
Technology
GOAT Network is designed as a Bitcoin Layer 2 network. In this model, transaction execution and application activity occur outside Bitcoin’s base layer, while settlement, withdrawals, and dispute mechanisms are intended to remain connected to Bitcoin.
The network uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify off-chain computation. It has also worked on BitVM2-based bridge architecture. BitVM2 refers to a class of Bitcoin scaling designs that aim to verify off-chain computation through Bitcoin Script and dispute mechanisms without requiring changes to Bitcoin consensus rules.
GOAT Network is listed as a member of the BitVM Alliance, a group focused on coordination around BitVM development, implementation, bridges, peer review, and related Bitcoin Layer 2 infrastructure.[3]
Ecosystem
GOAT Network’s ecosystem includes decentralized finance applications, bridge infrastructure, payment tooling, and developer infrastructure. The Defiant described GOAT Network as a Bitcoin decentralized finance ecosystem and reported that associated applications and infrastructure included The Graph, LayerZero, and Stargate Finance, among others.[4]
The project has also developed tooling for software agents and application developers. Its documentation describes support for AgentKit, x402 payment flows, and ERC-8004-related identity tooling.[5]
Funding
According to The Block, ZKM raised $5 million in pre-Series A funding at a $50 million valuation before announcing plans to launch GOAT Network.[1] The Defiant reported that GOAT Network’s pre-A round was led by OKX Ventures, with participation from Crypto.com, Polygon Ventures, Amber Group, and the Metis Foundation.[4]
