Gopal Devang (born 16 February 1965) is a former boxer who now serves as chairman of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) selection committee.

Devang competed as a boxer from 1975 to 1992. As a boxer, Devang was National Champion by winning gold medal continuously for 7 times in a row, all of the wins was with knockout.

In 1982 he joined Indian Army, (BEG) Bombay Engineer Group, or the Bombay Sappers & (ASI) Army Sports Institute and completed his service in Indian Army till 2004 as Honorary Captain.

In 1989, the Indian government gave him the Arjuna Award & In 1985, Shiv Chhatrapati Award for his achievements in international boxing. In 1987 & 1990 he was honoured with COA'S Card from The Chief of Army Staff.

He entered World Championship in 1984, and won 13+ Medals for his country (India).

Early life

Gopal Devang was born in Pimpri, Pune, Maharashtra, India. He came from poor family. His parents T.K. Narayan (Father) worked as a labour in Hindustan Antibiotics, Pimpri. His Mother (Amma) used to work as house maid for high rank employee in HA colony. He has one elder brother & two elder sisters.

Early career

His journey continued to senior Nationals boxing, he won 7 gold medal in a row and 6 of the fight was knock out. He became popular in India by now into the world of boxing. Indian Army offered him to join in sports academy.

1982

Gopal Devang was recruited in Bombay Sappers, (BEG) Bombay Engineer Group. He got opportunity to go for International Boxing Championship from (BEG) Bombay Engineer Group Boxing Team (Indian Army Regiment) to represent his country(India). His fight style was very aggressive and he got popular for knock out punches. He was mastered in uppercut punches & hook punches. He was titled as Good Night Punch for his aggressive knockouts. In the late 80's and early 90's he knocked down almost everyone he fought against. In late 1980s he achieved Gold medal & Best Boxer Award, 1st National Games, New Delhi.

1984

Gopal won Gold medal in 1st (S.A.F) South Asian Games, Nepal.

1985

Gopal Devang lost in quarter finals Kings Cup, Bangkok with edge to edge scores. Again in the same year XIIth Asian Boxing, Bangkok he lost in Quarter Finals. During same year on 2nd S.A.F South Asian Games, Dhaka – he won Gold Medal. He won one more Gold Medal same year India vs. Nepal. His performance for great this year and he was awarded with Shiv Chhatrapati Award from Maharashtra Government.

1986

10th Asian Games, Seoul Gopal won Bronze Medal in boxing for India.

1987

Gopal Devang won Gold Medal 3rd (S.A.F) South Asian Games, held in India. Same year he won Bronze Medal in 10th Asian Boxing, Kuwait. In same year India vs Thailand he won Gold Medal for India.

1988

Friendly tournament was held by USSR. Gopal had a great boxing fight and won Gold medal for India.

1989

The Indian government gave Devant the Arjuna Award & Best Services Sportsmen Award for outstanding achievement in sports. Same year in 14th Asian Boxing – China, He won Silver Medal and in 5th World Cup, USSR he place his position in 5th Rank in the international amateur boxing.

In late 1989, Inter Cup, West Germany he lost in quarter final & 4th S.A.F Games, Islamabad he lost in quarter final.

1990

Common Wealth Games, Auckland he lost in quarter final with edge to edge scores. In same year 11th Asian Boxing, China he won Silver medal. He was competing in Indo-Iraq Best Boxer, Bombay and won Gold medal. In 6th World Cup, Bombay he achieved 4th Rank. In late 1990, India vs USSR – Hyderabad, he won Gold Medal.

1999 - 2000

Gopal, completed N.I.S Diploma in Boxing with 'A' grade.

In 1992 he decided to take retirement.

Boxing life

Gopal Devang focused on Indian Army services & boxing coaching for (BEG) Bombay Engineer Group, or the Bombay Sappers & (ASI) Army Sports Institute.

After serving Indian army from 1982 to 2004 he joined Maharashtra Amateur Boxing Association.

Later he joined for Member of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) selection committee. He was nominated and incumbent for The Chairman of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) selection committee.

Now he is The Chairman of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) selection committee.
