Graham Games, also known as Graham Study, is a British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) known for his works on the inquest into the death of Michael Lush in The Late, Late Breakfast Show and his works into the turnstile analysis subsequent to the death of 96 Liverpool supporters featured in the Hillsborough documentary.
The Late, Late Breakfast Show
On 13 November 1986, volunteer Michael Lush fell to his death during his first rehearsal for a live stunt.[2] The stunt, called "Hang 'em High", involved bungee jumping from an exploding box suspended from a 120-foot (37 m) high crane after escaping from a straitjacket. The carabiner clip attaching his bungee rope to the crane sprang loose from its eyebolt during the jump. He died instantly upon impact of multiple injuries.[3]
Graham Games led the inquest which recorded a verdict of misadventure, the jury was informed of several failures on the part of the BBC. Games found that the clip could have been opened by the weight of a bag of sugar, and demonstrated that the clip sprang loose fourteen times out of twenty.[4]
Hillsborough
On 15 April 1989, a crowd crush at Hillsborough Stadium in a proposed Semi-Final match between Liverpool F.C. and Nottingham Forest F.C. led to the death of 97 Liverpool supporters.[5] This tragedy took place due to multiple factors including the small number of turnstiles at the Leppings Lane End.
Games featured in the Hillsborough Documentary speaking on his works as a senior scientific officer within the mechanical engineering department. His role was to look at how the turnstiles operated and how they were allocated amongst the ground. His inspection found clearly that the 7 turnstiles would never have been able to filter through 10,100 supporters in time. The opening of Gate C was controversial in both how it happened and the number of fans who may have entered without a ticket as a result. The police reported that there must have been thousands of ticketless fans who entered but Games' inspection disproved that entirely.[6]
