That leaves me with only a single non-passing coverage, and one more if you count that. (Non-independent sources are not counted) This doesn't quite hit WP:THREE and probably would fail WP:N anyways, so the content should be merged to give that article a good improvement. The New Train of Toronto, also known as the Hitachi Rail Toronto Driverless Set or the HR, will be the upcoming sixth series of rapid transit rolling stock that will be used on the Toronto subway system of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On the under construction Ontario Line. They were ordered by Infrastructure Ontario, after the contract for rolling stock, signaling, operations and maintenance was awarded to the consortium in November 2022[1] They will be built by Hitachi Rail and operated by Transdev. The first batch will be delivered by 2031, with all trains expected to be in service in 2036. As of 2025, they have a cost of CA$9.00 billion.[2] The trains would include wheelchair accessible seats, wifi charging, and the addition of bike racks for E-bikes and scooters, the trains will be part by the Toronto Transit Commission and operated by the company Transdev. This is the first automatic trainset in Toronto's subway system.[3]

The set will be a future project for the TTC, to provide for new passengers included with the Ontario Line. As part of it's easily-constructed equipment, it will provide access to passengers. Part of this car set will improve the quality of life for commuters in the Greater Toronto Area.

None of the train fleets are being constructed yet, and that might be that the TTC isn't officially confirming if the trains will arrive on time.

History

During production, the current premier of Ontario, Doug Ford is announcing the Toronto Transit Commission to build the Ontario Line, a successor to the downtown Relief line that was part of the cancelled TransitCity plan, 50 new trainsets will be produced and installed to relieve overcrowding on most stations on Line 1 Yonge-University, including Bloor–Yonge station.[4] The 19.6 kilometer line would connect from Don Valley to Exhibition downtown west.

New trains would be also built just like the others, using the standard gauge railway like Metrolinx's Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West. During production, new station names will be announced on the rapid transit line, with these providing connections with Osgoode and Queen station on Toronto's Line 1, and will continue underground like King–Bathurst and Queen–Spadina.[5] Both the trainsets will be equipped with the use of platform screen doors similar to the ones that are used on Union Pearson Express, which opened in 2015.[6]

On June 2, 2020, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx issued a request for qualification (RFQ) for rolling stock, systems, operations and maintenance (RSSOM), part of the first phase of procurement for the Ontario Line, these would include the trainsets to be operated on the line by using the software used onto the system, although construction begun in 2022, the trains need a requirement for automatic driving using a Revenue Service Demonstration (RSD) in order to provide avoiding a fatal accident on Ottawa's O Train Line 1.[7] On November 17, 2022, the contract was awarded to Connect 6ix (a consortium led by Hitachi Rail, Transdev, Plenary Americas, and Webuild) with a projected in-service date of 2031.[8]

In 2024, ABB has been awarded a contract by Hitachi Rail to provide a traction power supply solution for the Ontario Line subway project in Toronto, Canada. It would include expansion to the Ontario Line when it is completed in 2031. It will use modern signal priority and will implement UniGear ZS3.2, which is a medium-voltage, metal-clad, air-insulated switchgear, a ZX2 gas-insulated switchgear and heating rays on it's own subway system in North America, which is the Ontario Line.[9]

On the website Japan Industry News, Hitachi, the developer of many trainsets in it's own city located in Japan, announced on it's newspage about the new trainsets in a Canadian hub located in Scarborough in Ontario, these would include the trains being built in it's own country. The facility will serve as the Global Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) Competence Centre, providing engineering and technical expertise worldwide across it's own area and in Ontario overall.[10]

In 2026, the Government of Canada would invest of a $4 billion project to make the Ontario Line. Evan Solomon, minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, joined Doug Ford, premier of the Province of Ontario, Prabmeet Sarkaria, president of the Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Olivia Chow, mayor of the City of Toronto, to celebrate the partnership and mark continued progress on this important project.

The Ontario Line will accommodate a maximum amount of 390,000 daily boardings and will reduce travel times north from Thorncliffe Park to the street of downtown Toronto from 40 to 25 minutes.[11]

Community placements

The Ontario Line will be able to deliver faster, more frequent service by using the overhead cantery containing 1,500 volts that has been adopted by subway systems around many countries. All trains will be driverless, and provide automatic train control (ATC) to relieve a fatal accident on underground stations and tunnels if people are walking either in unstable area or dangerous places, like the ones used in Vancouver, London, Paris and Singapore.

It would be a future project for the TTC, to provide for passengers to board faster automatic subway trains, in accordance with operations and maintenance agreements. Passenger information will be added to provide passengers with communications like the ones on Toronto's new subway lines which are LCD displays. These visuals will be added because of a accident on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth in 2022.[12][13][14]

Management and storage facility

Like the Ontario's Line 5, it would also have a maintenance and storage facility operated by the Operations Control Centre where staff control train operations and are connected to it's system and will be used by the Ontario Backup Operations Control Centre. Construction would have began by demolishing a Islamic centre and a shopping mall that features Halal goods and items from a generous culture, with a projected in-service date of 2031. Construction began in May 2023.[15]

Service

Automatic trains will depart after 2 minutes and be equipped with CCTV cameras, recording passengers if there is a situation, it would also include the use of security officers on it's own fleet, and will also use fare evasion officers. All trains will stop at each station and use senser when the train closes it's doors safely or opens if there is a person in the way, and will be used to depart faster.

As part of it's easily-constructed equipment, it will provide faster, more frequent and reliable access to rapid transit, and will carry with more than 227,500 people within a 10-minute walk or if there are issues with the train, it would also use cellular service provided by Rogers 5G which are located on one of the cars.[14] The trains with improve the quality of life for commuters by reducing daily travel time by 2040.

These cars will be similar to the Toronto Rocket, a new train that was first in service in Toronto since 2011 and will be used prior to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Pan American 2028 Olympic Games. All of the trains will be powered by electricity along with the additional cost of adding automatic announcements and even a new LCD display. This would be the first driverless train in the City of Toronto, bringing Toronto to the future. It also would use the wire to power Toronto's new trains on elevated stations under the train.

These would use a overhead wire system located underground, once going in the tunnel, the overhead cantery would lower the hinge located on the top of one of the cars on the train, the new line includes nine traction power substations feeding the subway rails with 1,500 volts of direct current by ABB, making it the first use of European traction rail systems in Canada. Both of these would bring the subway system downtown to Lake Shore Boulevard until it's terminus located at Exhibition GO Station.

SelTrac has been developed and engineered in Ontario, Canada for more than 50 years. It's center, located in Toronto, powers 75+ cities worldwide and enhances mobility for millions of passengers on the upcoming trains and it's own trainsets that were built by different companies.[16]

When completed by 2031, the Ontario line will move it's trains up to 30,000 people per hour in each direction, removing up to 28,000 cars from the city’s roads from the 2030's and provide accessibility to Toronto's network since the completion of the accessibility program for Toronto's subway stations since 2026, although Old Mill and Islington stations were not completed until 2 years later..[17]

Design

The trains are designed like modern Japanese trains with wider doors, automatic signaling, automatic equipment and new regenerative braking systems. All trains are equipped with a cone shaped coupling that provides connection with other trains since new trains entered on the line after the Yonge subway opened 50 years ago (now called Line 1 Yonge–University).

The newly designed TTC rolling stock will include features such as the following, onboard Wi-Fi; digital passenger *information screens; wireless charging points; dedicated spaces for bicycles; double wheelchair areas; continuous, connected train cars; heating and cooling systems; doors that will open in sync with platform screen doors; and regenerative braking.

The new equipment that will be used on the trains will be capable of a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph), on surface stations, and elevated stations, it would be 50 kilometers per hour (31 mph).[18] [19]
