Xiamen Hithium Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 厦门海辰储能科技股份有限公), known as Hithium, is a Chinese multinational technology company[1] specializing in the research, development, and manufacturing of lithium iron phosphate (LFP)
energy storage batteries.[2] Founded in 2019, Hithium exclusively produces Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for utility-scale and commercial/industrial uses.[3]
The company has expanded its operations internationally, across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.[4] As of 2025, Hithium maintains regional offices and manufacturing facilities in Germany and Saudi Arabia, with utility-scale projects deployed in over 20 countries.[5] It also has an assembly facility in Texas in the United States.[6][7][8]
History
Hithium was founded in Xiamen, China, by Jeff Wu (Wu Zuyu), a former employee at Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). Hithium employs a "Just BESS" (Battery Energy Storage System) strategy, focusing exclusively on stationary applications.[9][10]
In July 2023, the company completed a Series C funding round, raising over CNY 4.5 billion (approx. US$622 million) from state-backed investors, including China Life Private Equity and Beijing Financial Street Capital.[11]
Operations and Manufacturing
Hithium operates primary research and development (R&D) and cell manufacturing hubs in China, while expanding assembly and integration operations internationally.[12]
China Facilities
The company's primary production bases are located in Xiamen and Chongqing. In 2025, the Chongqing Southwest Intelligent Manufacturing Center reached a production capacity of 56 GWh. This facility focuses on the fabrication of next-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and incorporates fourth-generation high-efficiency production lines. Hithium also maintains production facilities in Shandong province.[13]
United States Facility
In August 2025, Hithium opened a 485,000-square-foot facility in Mesquite, Texas.[14] The company has officially characterized the site as a "production location" and its "first manufacturing facility in North America”.
Products and Technology
Hithium manufactures Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and specialized systems for high-energy demand infrastructure. In December 2025, under its "135 Lighthouse Plan," the company released three new products.
∞Cell 1300Ah
A high-capacity battery cell developed specifically for 8-hour LDES applications. The cell utilizes what the company calls "ultra-thick electrode technology" to manage ion transport in large formats. According to Hithium, the high capacity of the cell allows for a 30% reduction in total system component counts compared to standard 280Ah or 314Ah cell configurations. The company states the cell is designed for a service life of over 20 years.
∞Power8 Solution
This is a containerized battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 6.9 MW / 55.2 MWh. It is configured as a "turnkey" solution for utility-scale projects requiring 8-hour discharge durations.[15]
∞Power Solutions for AI Data Center
A hybrid energy portfolio designed to address the volatile power loads of data centers. The system combines long-duration lithium batteries for sustained energy backup with high-rate technology. This configuration is intended to provide millisecond-level response to rapid power fluctuations while maintaining long-term energy stability.
IPO Status
In March 2025, Hithium filed for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange,[A1] aiming to raise up to $500 million.
In October 2025, Hithium resubmitted a new application (A1 filing) to the HKEX. The updated filing is under review in accordance with HKEX procedures.[16][17]
Financial Strategy and Subsidies
Hithium experienced revenue growth during its expansion phase between 2022 and 2024. According to corporate filings and industry reports, the company's revenue increased from CNY 3.62 billion in 2022 to CNY 12.92 billion in 2024[18]. While 2024 marked the company's first reported net profit of CNY 288 million, financial disclosures from 2024 show that Hithium's net profit was accompanied by CNY 414 million in government grants and subsidies.[19]
Legal Disputes
Since its founding, Hithium has been involved in several high-profile legal disputes with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL),[20] the world's largest battery manufacturer and the former employer of several Hithium executives. These disputes have centered on allegations of unfair competition, intellectual property infringement, and the misappropriation of trade secrets.
Non-Compete and Unfair Competition Claims
The legal conflict between the two firms began in 2023 when an arbitration tribunal ruled that Hithium's founder and chairman, Wu Zuyu, had violated a non-compete agreement with CATL. Wu was ordered to pay CNY 1 million in compensation.[21]
In June 2025, CATL initiated a broader lawsuit against Hithium and several affiliated entities at the Intermediate People's Court of Ningde, seeking CNY 150 million (approx. US$21 million) in damages for alleged "unfair competition."[22] CATL alleged that Hithium had systematically poached its technical personnel and developed battery products with specifications nearly identical to its own patented designs. Specifically, CATL claimed that the energy density of Hithium's 587 Ah battery cell deviated from CATL's patented designs by only 4.4%, which falls below the 10% threshold typically used in the industry to differentiate original designs from potential infringements.[23]
