Houston Tidelanders is a men’s barbershop chorus based in Houston, Texas. Founded in 1946, the chorus is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), an international organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the barbershop style of a cappella singing. The Houston Tidelanders perform regularly throughout the Greater Houston area and have participated in district-level barbershop competitions.
History
The Houston Tidelanders were established in 1946 during the early growth of the Barbershop Harmony Society following World War II.[1] The chorus became one of the earliest barbershop chapters in Texas and has remained active for more than seven decades.
Over time, the Tidelanders have performed at community events,[2] civic functions,[3] and private engagements[4] across southeast Texas. The group has also participated in competitions sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Southwest District.[5]
Affiliation
The Houston Tidelanders are a chartered chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS),[6] formerly known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). The society organizes regional, national, and international competitions[7] and provides educational and performance standards for barbershop ensembles.
The chorus belongs to the BHS Southwest District, which includes chapters from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
Musical style
The Houston Tidelanders perform in the barbershop[8] style of a cappella singing. This style is characterized by four-part harmony, close chord structures, dominant seventh chords, and an emphasis on blend and tuning.
The chorus performs a variety of repertoire, including traditional barbershop standards, patriotic and Americana selections, gospel music, popular songs arranged for barbershop harmony, and seasonal music.
Organization
The Houston Tidelanders are led by a music director[9] and governed by an elected board of officers. Membership is open to men interested in singing barbershop harmony and participating in chorus activities.
Rehearsals are typically held weekly[10] in the Houston area and are open to prospective members.
