Human Machine Fellowship (German: Mensch-Maschine-Stipendium, lit. "Human-Machine Fellowship") is a German contemporary art, new media art, and ecological art fellowship awarded annually by the JUNGE AKADEMIE of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin in cooperation with E-WERK Luckenwalde and VISIT, the artist-in-residence programme of the E.ON Foundation. Founded in 2020, the program awards up to four fully funded fellowships each year to emerging international artists working across all disciplines. Each fellowship is endowed with €20,000, intended to cover production costs including research and development, travel, materials, and presentation.^[1][2]

The fellowship is named after the thematic focus of the program, the relationship between human beings and machines, and is rooted in questions of ecology, digital technology, and artificial intelligence. It was established through a partnership with the JUNGE AKADEMIE and the E.ON Foundation's VISIT Residency program, which has supported international artists since 2010.^[3] The program was extended in 2026 for an additional three years and expanded with new formats and partners across Europe.^[4]

The program supports artists who enable new ways of thinking and engaging with the world in the context of human-machine relationships, particularly those who challenge dualisms such as the "artificial" and the "natural." Projects at the intersection of art, energy, and ecology are prioritized, with a focus on the urgent aspects of contemporary society and the planetary situation.^[5] The 2026 cohort's thematic focus is Mechanic Ghosts & Entangled Realities, with particular emphasis on sound, performance, film, and literature.^[6]
