iScanner is a document scanning and management application for mobile devices and the web. Developed by BP Mobile LLC (AIBY Group) in the United States, the software allows users to digitize paper documents, edit and organize files, and convert scans into searchable and editable formats using optical character recognition (OCR).[1][2] The application is distributed under a freemium model, with a free version and a paid subscription offering access to advanced AI-based features.​​[3][4]

History

iScanner was first released for iOS in 2015, followed by an Android version in 2016.[5] The application expanded its feature set during the late 2010s as mobile document scanning became more widely adopted for remote work and small business use. In 2021, iScanner introduced an object-counting feature using the device camera, enabling automated counting of similar items.[6]

In 2022, the app launched an AI-based document dewarping algorithm, branded as Straightener, designed to correct perspective distortion in scanned documents. Later, iScanner added computer vision and artificial intelligence algorithms for document processing, including automated edge repair for damaged pages, background cleanup, and blur reduction.[7]

Between 2023 and 2025, the application added features including ID document collages, AI-assisted document querying, eco-impact tracking tools, online file conversion utilities, and additional document repair and filtering functions aimed at small business workflows.[8] In 2023, the developers launched a dedicated program for students, offering extended access to the application's premium features for users with verified educational email addresses.[2] In 2025, iScanner reportedly reached 125 million downloads worldwide.[1][9]

The application supports document scanning, editing, storage, and sharing. Core functions include automatic document border detection, perspective correction, background cleanup, and blur reduction for scanned images.[4][3][10]  The application also includes automated image processing and AI-assisted enhancement tools, such as background noise removal and perspective correction, as part of the scanning workflow.[1][10] Editing tools include PDF page reordering, merging, splitting, annotation, digital signatures, text redaction, and file conversion to multiple formats.[11][12] iScanner supports optical character recognition (OCR) in more than 20 languages, conversion of scanned documents into editable text formats, and full-text search within documents.[13] Additional functionality includes cloud synchronization, file import from third-party storage services, protected folders for stored documents (including an optional decoy access code), and remote log-out from connected devices.[2][14]  Some features, including OCR and AI-based tools, are available through a subscription model.[3][15]

iScanner is available on iOS, iPadOS, Android, and as a web application. Minimum supported versions include iOS and iPadOS 16.0, and Android 10.[4][3] The interface is localized into multiple languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and others.[3][4]

Reception

iScanner has been covered by technology publications and review platforms. Screen Rant included the application in a comparison of document scanner apps for iPhone and Android.[16] Android Headlines published a dedicated review describing iScanner as a document scanning and PDF management application with AI-assisted features.[1] User reviews are available on software review platforms such as G2 and Capterra, where users discuss scanning quality, OCR functionality, and general usability.[17]

Awards and recognition

The application has received several industry awards. In 2022, the application won a Best Mobile App Award in the productivity category.[18] In 2023, iScanner received the People’s Voice Award in the Work & Productivity category at the Webby Awards.[19]
