Comment: Doesn't read like an encyclopedia entry. References are of low quality. It doesn't make a clear description of what the organisation is. No proper Lede. Possibly AI generated. Pencilceaser123 (talk) 02:32, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
Comment: I'm not seeing evidence that this organization is notable. All sources are connected to the IFCS in some way, and are therefore not independent. We need significant coverage in reliable, independent sources. WeirdNAnnoyed (talk) 11:50, 3 May 2026 (UTC)
International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS)
The International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS) is an established international classification and data science society. IFCS combines interest in scientific principles, numerical methods, theory and practice of data science, data analysis and classification [1][2]. The understanding of these computer science and statistics methodologies are core for artificial intelligence (AI), especially for building the foundation of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) [3] [4].
History
Learned socities of data science applications and methodologies as supervised (classification) and unsupervised (cluster analysis) learning exist since 1964 when the Classification Society was set up [5] (which separated 1984 into British Classification Society, now British Data Science Society - BDSS [6], and Classification Society of North America nowadays The Classification Society [7]). Founding first officers of the Classification Society were as chairperson Edmund Leach, secretary-treasurer John Gilmour and editor Peter Sneath in 1964. In due course several regional or national classification societies were established in Asia, Europe and North America which led to the founding of International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS) during the joint 4th European Meeting of the Psychometric Society [8] and Classification Societies at Queen's College in Cambridge, UK, July 4, 1985 [9]. The founding member societies were British Classification Society (BCS), Classification Society of North America (CSNA), Gesellschaft für Klassifikation (GfKl) [10] , Japanese Classification Society (JCS), Societa Italiana di Statistica (SIS) [11] and Societe Francophone de Classification (SFC). IFCS has established protocol agreement of working together with the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) [12] [13] of International Statistical Institute (ISI)[14] and the European Association for Data Science (EuADS) [15] [16] . The first presidents of the IFCS were Hans-Hermann Bock 1985 [17], Robert R. Sokal 1988, J.C. Gower 1990 [18], W.H.E. Day 1992, A. Gordon 1994, Raymond J. Carroll 1996, Chikio Hayashi 1998 and J.-P. Rasson 2000.
Biannual International Conference
The first biannual international conference of the IFCS was in Aachen, Germany, 1987. Since then conferences took place in Charlottesville, USA (1989), Edinburgh, Scotland (1991), Paris, France (1993), Kobe, Japan (1996), Rome, Italy (1998), Namur, Belgium (2000), Cracow, Poland (2002), Chicago, Illinois (2004), Ljubljana, Slovenia (2006), Dresden, Germany (2009), Frankfurt, Germany (2011), Tilburg, The Netherlands (2013), Bologna, Italy (2015), Tokyo, Japan (2017), Thessaloniki, Greece (2019), Porto, Portugal (2022) [19] and San Jose, Costa Rica (2024)[20].
Contribution to Data Science
In 1996, the International Federation of Classification Societies became the first conference to specifically feature data science as a topic [21] [22] [23] [24] .
IFCS Awards
The IFCS Research Medal for Outstanding Research was awarded to: Hans-Hermann Bock 2015 [25], Geoffrey McLachlan 2017, David Hand (statistician) 2019, Bradley Efron 2021, Edwin Diday 2022, Peter Rousseeuw 2024. Further awards of the IFCS are Chikio Hayashi Award, Helga and Wolfgang Gaul Stiftung Award [26] , Student Paper and Travel Award and Student Poster Session Competition Award.
