Draft:Jane Fitz

Jane Fitz (born 1972)[1] is an English DJ. Noted for her 'eclectic and completely authentic' style,[2] she is regarded as 'one of the most respected DJs working today'.[2]

Early life

Fitz grew up in Barking, where she bought her first record at the age of ten, and built up a collection of 30-40 records within a year.[1] She now has a collection of over 12,000 vinyl records.[3] She first DJed at a friend's party at the age of 13, and found music to be a respite from school bullying.[4]

Career

Fitz continued DJing on the London club circuit in the 1990s while she was a student. She began to pick up professional bookings at the age of 23 while living in Hong Kong, where she was working as a music journalist.[4] She initially played jazz, rare groove, house and deep house on the Hong Kong circuit, and did not know how to mix at first.[4][2] She has also worked professionally as a teacher, promoter, copy-editor, and in the television industry.[4][5] Fitz returned to London in 1999 after her work visa expired,[2] and set up her own club night, Peg, which ran until 2009.[2][6][7] In 2012, she launched Night Moves, a regular club night at London's Pickle Factory, with fellow female DJ Jade Seatle.[8] Fitz has spoken out about the 'lack of [female promoters]' in the London club scene, but that this 'glaring void' has provided her with a 'gap in the market'.[7]

Fitz has gone on to perform internationally, including returning to Hong Kong for a residency in 2025,[2] and has also lived and performed in Serbia.[4] However, her career developed 'very slowly'[2] and was 'a hobby' for many years around her full-time employment.[2] The start of the 2010s marked 'a tipping point', as she began working with more notable acts such as Mike Huckaby.[9][4]

Fitz's 'eclectic and intense'[10]sets encompass a wide range of styles, from 'soul to trip-hop to techno to ambient',[4] and she has been described as 'the UK's most underrated DJ'.[8] In 2025, Fitz was listed as one of Mixmag's 'Top 25 DJs who defined the year 2025'.[11]
